The Goverment should have done something years ago, the numbers of unwanted animals dying is just carnage.
Its not as if we are desperately searching for a cure for some nasty disease, the 'cure' is already known- its called NEUTERING!
Without government backing, animal charities will never get on top of the problem. I'd like to see a day when my pens lie empty and disused, and I'm sure most rescues would love the same (though some large organisations may be put out if they lose their well paid jobs)
I'm disappointed that there are no so called celebrities who are vocal about neutering. I know Paul O'Grady has done excellent work , for many years telling people to get rescue animals, but does he now mention neutering at all ?(thats a genuine question as I have no telly to see his Battersea programme), I've never heard him mention it on his radio show.
It is just so frustrating that so many animals are dying so needlessly. A free/donation only non means tested cat neutering scheme in our area has done thousands of cats, but is up against the few idiots who think its cute to have kittens, With goverment backing, those cats could be done.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. Not to mention all the backyard breeders who want to make a fast buck
Marc Abraham is a vet I admire greatly, and is fast reaching celeb status in his campaign to abolish backyard breeders, puppy farms and promoting neutering schemes.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Little point in asking this government to do anything to help.Their idea of helping would be to hunt, shoot or trap it.So they won't give a cuss if thousands of dogs and cats are being put down becuase there are too many.
As regards animal welfare i have never found a government with so little thought for the welfare of animals.0 -
ok perhaps i should have said "some of the government ministers",they're not all bad.But DEFRA is appalling0

I have a black, unneutered tom cat harassing my boys when they go minding their business in the garden. Lost count on how many times I tried talking to his owners.
They are renting, not sure who their landlord is but perhaps a clause in all tenancies that any pets on the premises MUST be neutered and the owner must have a proof for that?0 -
Something defo needs done, I don't know what though.
I'm not planning on neutering my boy ( well not any time soon ) but then again I am a responsible owner and won't let him roam... I know some owners with unspeyed females who don't plan to spey but again, responsible owners who keep them on leads when in season and away from other dogs.
Sadly there are a lot out there who do not behave responsibly when it comes to pets

My male cat is neutered btw, as he obv can't be kept on a lead and don't want him harassing the neighbourhood.0

Any reason you've decided not to neuter? It really would be beneficial to do so, to prevent future testicular, prostrate and perianal cancers, if nothing else.
Same again applies to your b1tch owning friends. They are exposing their dogs to preventable and possibly fatal pyometra infections.
There really is NO excuse not to neuter!!!!“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Personal choice, it's not an excuse it's a choice.
I may breed him in future, only, of course, if his health tests (hips/elbows) come back good and he turns out to be an excellent example of the breed and of course would only allow him to be bred to an equally health tested female. I am also showing him and you can't show a neutered dog.
Not neutering is only a problem when people let it become one. It's the actions of those people that need to be changed.
There is also evidence that neutering can actually cause some conditions also, always a flip side to things it seems.0 -
Seen a lot of pyometris operations, and dogs to ill to stabilise to have the op, not a nice way to go.
Reinforces my opinion of the Kennel Club if it wont allow the showing of neutered dogs.
Maybe if people were made to watch a pyometris operation ....
Sad thing is, of the people who have lost beloved pets to it, most are annoyed with the vets that they hadn't been told it was a risk.
There can be side effects to spaying a b1tch(not common)- b1tch incontinence, one of my dogs had it- it was a massively easier to fix than a pyo- I know which of the 2 I'd rather have,
The health effects of too many cats, dogs, ponies etc are the most extreme that there can be- its fatal- being pts or starving to death as a stray.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0
