iTunes Home Sharing across VPN

I have an iPad, iPhone 5 and Apple TV so obviously all of my media is in (or in the process of being converted for) my iTunes library. At home this all works wonderfully and I can access all my media instantly via Home Sharing. I had presumed that this would also be the case over a VPN connection, as all the devices would register on the same network, but it apparently doesn't.
I'm reasonably tech savvy (and on an electronic engineering degree), & a little research has thrown up two possible solutions. One of them needs more setup, but I'm pretty sure will work (http://provideotech.org/bonjour-and-vpn-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-googling-and-love-simplicity/); the other is nice and simple but I want to know if anyone knows if this method will actually help. http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20080626194901370 I think that what the writer actually presumes is that you'd be dialling into the VPN from an actual computer running Windows/Mac OS, and you need to alter the hosts file on that computer, not one within the destination VPN network.
Anyone any ideas?

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
- Mark Twain
Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.
