Using different routers and ISP

Options
Hi again,

I have been having severe problems with my Orange broadband but after contacting the Orange help line it is now back up working again.

The help line advisor told me that there was some sort of "tag" on the line which was blocking access, or something like that.

I was just wondering whether the fact that I have two different routers (an old Sar 715, and a newer Netgear 2200) and use them alternatively may have anything to do with the problem?

Does the ISP allow different routers to be used or is it expected that just one "recognized" router will be allowed to access the system?

Does anyone here use different routers (perhaps with Orange) without any problems? I would be grateful for any information as I dont want to be without the internet again, if I can help it.

Thanks

I'm not an expert on ADSL, but from memory depending on the service, some forms of ADSL "learn" the best speed the line will support when you set it up, so may relearn it when you change the modems (IIRC at least one version basically tries to increase your speed over the space of several days, until it gets the to a point where it's unreliable, then drops down to where it's reliable again).
In which case swapping between two modem/routers may be causing the the line to be starting fresh on learning what speed it'll work at at.

Is there any particular reason you swap between the two routers?

IIRC most ADSL companies don't care what modem/router you use.

    Thanks for reply Nilrem,

I have had the Sar 715 for years but I could not use it for my wifi so bought the Netgear 2200. The intention was to use the Netgear all the time but I had consistent problems logging in to the ISP with it and so used the Sar 715 as this just got me on line with no problems.

The internet connection was very erratic with the Netgear router. I could use it all day with no problems at all, and then the next morning when I switched on the router it would not get an internet connection. I then had to go through the setup routines which eventually used to coax back the connection but was very time consuming.

Eventually both routers failed to get an internet connection and so I contacted Orange who told me there was a tag on the line which was blocking the service.

I am trying to figure out what caused the block on the line. If it was nothing to do with my using two routers (one at a time, of course) then I would like to continue using both routers, if possible.
