  • Frankly, if signing up for Skype is the most you have to do to apply for a job then I wouldn't worry.

My first job out of uni- i had to write a bunch of code to do a complex analysis, I then had to do a presentation in front of 7 academic staff and explain it in various different terms. Took me a good week of work to get it finished. (Only myself and another candidate finished the task)

I have no idea how Skype is going to help anyone if you can just use the phone but still.

It's cheaper (usually included with internet package rather than using office phone at business rates).

then I will just have to re install it. IM for an interview is an odd one when they are 30 mins up the road.

So it was a hassle to take 5 minutes to install it, but you've taken the time to uninstall it and will re-install it if they ask you for an interview?! Why didn't you wait until you heard, then make the decision?! :D
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

It will be a no anyway as the last question asked to describe a day of 'fun' you have had recently - that's a joke like I have had one in the past year.

They probably didn't know that, though, given that they're (in all likelihood) not psychic. So they weren't thinking "hey, this girl's had a crap year, let's make a joke of it". They're just trying to hear more from you and get to know your personality more.

This isn't a criticism, just an observation: you are coming across as quite negative, which is understandable when job hunting for a long time, but others will feel that - including employers. Which may not help you in job hunting; the question you were asked about a day of fun wasn't personal, and asking for a Skype account isn't to make your life complicated. But as I said: not a criticism (it's your job hunt, after all!), just an observation. :)

I know the qustion is not personal and I could have lied and made something up so I told the truth.
  • Have used skype for an interview with someone in New York - but not sure for a local job - depends on what the job is I suppose - if its online marketing or web developer they may expect it.

Well I am screwed then as I have no webcam.
You can have a Skype interview without the webcam: DS2 did for an interview with a US based company where the video quality wasn't good enough.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • I have Skype installed on a memory stick so it doesn't take up room on my laptop. See here: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/skype_portable

I work for a multi-national company and we use Skype for interviews. Or FaceTime if the candidate has an Apple device.

A lot of companies are using Skype where they might previously have held a phone interview.

I use a mobile broadband and connection is crap for video calls. Companies should factor in the possibility of the internet connection cutting off in the middle of the interview...
