We got 2 bookcases, a pull out mobile table and desk and a filing unit from Argos last year. It all fit together easily, is very study and is notchipped, marked warped or anything- like most things flatpack it is the design, and a bit of luck too.

I think it depends what you go for.

I've got some cheap imitation pine bedroom furniture which is still going strong after 10 years. I've also got some solid pine bedroom furniture 5 years ago which apart from a few wobbly handles and the backs of the wardrobes bending out are fine.

If anyone has bought any White Virginia wardrobes from Argos I would be interested to know as I was thinking of getting that for my dd's bedroom.

Just for general info; Argos & Homebase are part the same company - forming the Home Retail Group (HRG).

So if you see an item in an Argos Catalogue, and Homebase stock it as well, it might be on display in a Homebase store.
Also useful if a household item is out of stock in Argos etc

  • It is worth noting that Argos' products come from a number of different suppliers so the quality does vary.

Generally you get what you pay for with most of this type of furniture. The cheapest products generally have small dimensions, thin boards for the carcass and a cheap finish. Spend more money and you will get better quality carcass, hardware (hinges, fixings etc). As mentioned above the best bet is to go and see the furniture in a shop.

Also bear in mind that shop floor samples take a lot of abuse during their lifetime and are often just built by the staff in the stores so not well assembled.

fair points but as john says you get what you pay for.

i have just put together what would be a top end media unit and coffee table from argos range and it looks great.
As does the bedroom wardrobe, bedsides and drawers i have from argos.

If you buy cheap stuff esp the canvas and wood stuff i wont last you too long. I havent bought much in ikea that has lasted either and to be honest i think its overrated as well.

Best tip is to head into homebase as peeps have said and check the quality of the stuff u may want to buy at argos. Price may well be cheaper in either or at any time.

Have to say the Kentucky dining table at HB is a very good buy at the price though
  • Ok - I have some experience here ....

To sum up in a nutshell:-

Argos furniture is asking for trouble - stuff missing, fell apart in no time at all and finish was worse than the lousiest of wallpapers - 100% ripped off albeit looks pretty...at first.

MFI furniture isn't bad at all (I have home office range in Boston range - very nice indeed). But not so easy to put together and have to spot problems within3 days of delivery but ...

IKEA furniture is seriously the best quality/price ratio - particularly some of their unfinished solid wood stuff and easily put together "all with 1 allen key" so to speak. Can't wait till you order online. We just putting their wooden blinds up now and they look nice....

Forgot to mention we have the PAX range or wardrobes too. They are solid and going strong after purchase 5yrs ago despite being c236cm high and 50cm/1m wide and were packed to the brim. The good news is that this range is now also in a 75cm (recommended as this will prevent any risk of overloading due to heavier loads as the 1m wide robes can lack mid support if you hang very heavy clothes) however - previously these were only. Go for the best doors you can afford (much cheaper than when we first bought due to its success) and the best bit is when you move you can just buy the carcases again which we've just done as we have dark solid wood frames and frosted etched glass doors - too expensive to leave and no longer available either. Now their range is all mdf but frankly if its good quality its all you need.

    Absolutely terrible.

We have some old Argos furniture being used as storage in the garage - it's not even any good for that.

Bought Argos flat pack furniture before as I had vouchers.

The wardrobes and chest of drawers are cheap and nasty, best avoided. Spend your money in Ikea as it is of more solid build.
  • Like most people here have said ... please avoid! the quality is really rubbish and you will spend hours trying to figure out how to put the thing together and then double the amount trying to make it stay together!
