Xbox 360 advice

Options
My 12 year old wants an Xbox 360 for her birthday and I need some advice really. I've looked at the products in Argos and I'm not sure which package to buy. I think we'll go for the 250g but not sure whether or not to get the Kinect option too. Is it worth it? Also do we need to buy another hand controller as I think some of the packages only provide one and it sounds like a daft question, but do the hand controllers plug into the Xbox or do they require batteries? Thanks

Kinect - depends what games you want to play - if they use Kinect, it's worth it, if they don't it's not. Check the individual games.
It'll come with 1 controller generally. If you're buying a package it may have an extra one, check the individual packages. I think they're all wireless controllers these days, and they take 2xAA batteries (and do last for ages).

We bought our DD the 250GB + Kinect last Xmas. IMO Kinect is well worth having.

Hand controllers are available wired and wireless. Apart from initial setting up, you don't need a hand controller when playing most games that use the Kinect.

Buy a package with just one controller for now. If a second is needed buy as a separate present, suggest a relative buys it, or DD can buy with birthday/xmas money.
How do I add a signature?

re the controller, you can get 2 types of controllers (similar to keyboards and mice for PC's), theres wired and wireless (requires batteries), there is or was a play and charge kit which would allow a wireless controller to be used as a wired controller except a battery pack is plugged into the controller which is charging whilst you play (a cable connects the controller to the xbox). If you dotn got for the play and charge kit, go for rechargeable batteries to use in the wireless controller.
  • Apologies for jumping in, seemed more sensible than opening a new thread as I too was wondering about kinect. My son has asked for an xbox 360 for xmas/ birthday (he will be 8). He wants to play minecraft and so far this is the only game he has asked for, although he played assassins creed at my sisters and enjoyed that.

What difference does the size of the drive make and for a child, what size is the best to get considering price v useability. I thought all the games came on a disc and it was only saved data he would need on the machine thus 250gb seems overkill (he only has a ps2 at the moment).

    Thanks

Games can be saved to the hard drive (but for copy protection you still need the disc in the drive). Avantage? Faster load times, as well as less wear on the disc.
A DVD maxes out at 9GB, so that's stacks of games you could save onto a 250GB drive. Or music, or films, pictures etc. As long as you don't get the 4GB one you'll be grand, lots of people (like me!) make do with the older 60GB drive!
  • Note sure if this is the best place to post, my son is also after a Xbox, I was advised to go for the new model as it has inbuilt WIFI and to get the 250GB version.

I was looking at the £190ish deal from Tesco etc with Forza and Fifa 13, however I found a 250GB with the Kinect and Fifa 13 from Game/Gamestation for £260

As well as the Fifa 13 it is advertised with Kinect Sports and Dance Central 2 and 480 Xbox points. I ordered on Tuesday, delivered on Weds (Free delivery), it also includes Kinect Adventues (not sure if download or actual game).

I think this is the 250GB Kinect Holiday Bundle plus Fifa 13, I think it was a good deal

Not sure if this helps or not

The size of drive will make quite a difference.

As previously said you can install games to the hard drive which quickens game play and loading times.

Most games require a patch or have downloadable content which can improve and extend the life of games -

You can store music and films

    You can download game demos

Overall its just a better experience - the 4GB is to small IMHO.

I havent seen one between 250gb and 4gb though - have they stopped making the 60gb ?

Gazza, 60GB was one of the many sizes offered in the original XBox 360. I agree, any 360 with a hard drive will do.
