Best way to add insulation

Hi all,
I have a loft space in the roof of my extension.
It's not designed to be useful accessible space - it's accessible only by a ladder and a hatch, the roof height is relatively low and the floor is not reinforced.
There is relatively little insulation in there and I'd like to improve it. There is plenty of space to do so. However, I'm struggling to think of the best way to do it.
I don't really want to climb around inside the loft as the ceiling is thin if I miss my footing on the rafters. I can't get a decent size crawl-board through the hatch. And I'm not sure how to lay insulation right up to the corners from the hatch (if possible at all).
Any bright ideas?

Normally you would just do what you don't want to do, tread carefully and stick to the rafters (using any roof supports to help you stay balanced). The only problem with a crawling board is that as it is not anchored in any way it could slip as you move around and end up slipping off the rafters.
As insulation comes in roll just place the end of the roll as far as you can towards the eves working towards the hatch and then trim with a sharp pair of scissors (there should be laying instructions on the insulation).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbJRSnqJMJU
