I'm still not 100% sure if we need a new oven seal though...basically whenever we use it we always need to turn it up at least 1 gas mark higher than the recipe states else we will end up cooking it for at least double the time, but the seal looks fine to us. Any ideas? Sorry if this sounds dumb but I have never had to do this before!

OK. I've put my engineering hat on. All I can think of is this:

:undecided Is the knob that you use to turn on the oven correctly fitted and undamaged? If it's a bit wonky that would account for you needing to seemingly turn up the heat.

:undecided Test the seal. Turn off the oven. Put a bowl of something pungent in the oven such as a bowl of hot water and lemon juice. Close the oven door and see if you can smell the lemon in the kitchen. If you can the seal may be damaged.

:undecided The thermostat could be faulty and turning off the heat before it's up to temperature.

:undecided Gas line/jets could be clogged.

:undecided Or you could have a gas leak!

:undecided You can gently clean around the gas jets. If there's a white build up around them it might be clogging the jets.

So you could look for free advice online from somewhere like: http://www.howtomendit.com

Or you could pay a little for advice from gas engineers online on a service like this: http://www.justanswer.com/appliance/27j7k-magic-chef-gas-oven-oven-not-reaching-temperature.html

And maybe watch this video on how to diagnose problems with gas ovens not heating up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkV4Wj0klkQ

:female: Got £15 voucher from Tesco for returning broken two-year old stereo system! We had taken care of it and seldom used it and the CD player stopped working. The store wouldn't help as the warranty had expired so I posted it to customer services HQ. Worth the effort!

:female: Doing OnePoll and Valued Opinions.

:female: Taking a roll to work so I could just buy a hot sausage for lunch.

    :female: Checking online banking.

:female: Chatting to my partner about moving house and to friend about helping us move for a small donation.
