Fleeces and woollens smelling 'washed'

Don't use fabris softener on fleeces. It makes them smell - some part of the softener sticks to the fleece - but not the perfume.0

Glad to see I am not the only one then, LOL.
I do clean the machine every month with linescale cleaner and soda - after posting I went and double checked that the filter was not blocked (it wasn't) and it gets put on a big 90 was every few weeks anyway because of hubbys work clothes.
At the same time?? Descaler is *usually* citric acid and washing soda is alkaline, the two will cancel one another out if so.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
I had the same problem - then developed a smelly machine. Some research later, I discovered that the answer is to use biological soap powder (liquid or whatever). I also wash on 40. All my clothes smell gorgeously fresh - people at work have even commented.0

I don't have this problem through the summer when I can get everything out on the line. The problem starts when I dry things on an airer indoors (I'd do anything to avoid using the tumble drier;)). Softener which smells lovely in the bottle smells really sour on clothes dried indoors and the room smells yuk too!
Today I managed to get some clothes out but they hardly dried at all. Put them on the airer tonight, no bad smell.
The difference was I just used vinegar as a softener.
As the clothes were outside for a while then maybe that had something to do with it but it has to be worth a try.0 -
I don't use fabric softener in every wash, you're not supposed to use it with acrylics. (I think it stretches the fibres.)
I buy a spray called "fabfresh" and spray the washing either on the line or when it is dry. It smells lovely. My grown up son often sprays his clothes with it before he puts them on!
I buy mine at a car boot sale, but I think Home Bargains sells it.0 -
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact fleeces are made from plastic bottles? Maybe they are rebelling against the conditioner bottles? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0

Mold and bacteria can build up in a washing machine over time, the smell can be transferred onto clothes.
We moved into our first house 18 mths ago, my mum gave us a washing machine as she had a spare one. After a year we had the exact same problem, t-shirts etc. were coming out of the washing machine smelling awful once dry.
I decided to buy a new washing machine as nobody knows how old the other one is and now I do a monthly 'maintenance wash' as advised, a cycle with a bleach based cleaner at 60c+ and always leave the door open a few inches when not in use

For those that use vinegar can I ask a (dumb) question..
Do you use normal or white vinegar? Also how much do you use of it and do you just put it in the conditioner slot?
Thats 3 questions actually but really interested in this as lo gets a rash with fabric conditioner but I'd like our clothes softer0 -
Not a dumb question I was about to ask the same thing.0

I am a bit puzzled by this because my hubby wears fleeces to work all the time. I use fabric conditioner, dry them over the airer and they smell lovely and fresh.
I do quite often finish the laundry off with 20 minutes in the tumble dryer though, especially in bad weather. With my hubby working outdoors and the kids doing sports I just wouldnt be able to keep on top of the washing otherwise.
I was told once that using bio powder helps to keep your machine clean. Liquids and capsules leave residue which can cause your machine to smell.
I also run the washing machine through with a small amount of bleach now and again to clean it.0
