My TAG was a wedding gift from my husband. It was expensive, yes, but we can afford it.

To me it is a symbol of time, 'our time together'.,

In 11 years it has never left my wrist other than 2 battery changes. It still looks and feels as fantastic as the day he gave it to me, and I can still feel that day like it was yesterday.

I applaud you for your choice in wanting to gift a watch, I am sure it will be cherished forever.

As for those who 'don't get it', that is absolutely fine. It is nice to feel special, whether it is by arriving in a flash car, wearing a nice outfit or simply smelling of expensive perfume. Life is different things to different people. Enjoy it (if you can).

Now where is my Lidl £2.99 watch, with mineral glass, water resistant to 30 metres, stainless steel back, real leather strap, 5 year battery life watch, with it's 3 year warranty that keeps absolutely perfect time.

I honestly doubt you will passing this on to your grandson and even if by some fluke you do, I doubt that he would greatly treasure a £2.99 watch.

If this wasn't what you are wanting a watch for and you jsut wanted to tell the time, then that's great you probably made the right choice for your requirements.

However other people may be expecting something different from a watch to you and therefore need something different.

If I wanted something to pass down to generations to come then I don't think the Lidl one would be the right choice.

I think the discussion is interesting but pleae don't assume other peoples intentions.
You have accused people of being materialistic and trying to "keep up with the Joneses" whereas these are not the only reaons for having a nice watch.
Passing it down the generations or a special significance of a relationship or occassion are other reasons that people have (I'm sure there are others).

    .

I wouldn't dream of imposing my personal taste in watches down to another generation, I am sure there may just be enough money for them to buy whatever they choose.

They will have time on their hands to spend it then.. ;)
  • Hi ,

Like a few other people have said , just go into the store and say what is the cash price . My friend works in a well known jewelery shop in Bluewater and people are always asking for discounts there . When I was asking about a watch before she gave me this example , a guy came in and was looking at a Rolex , shop price £45,000  , he asked if they could do a discount and straight away they said he could have the watch for the cash price of £38,700 . He said yes , came back with the cash within 2 hours .

So it does pay to ask for a discount . I would rather buy from an authorised dealer as I know the warranty would be kosher as opposed to just the warranty of the company you bought it from .

    Hope this helps
Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
    Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !

I think it's quite hurtful to say a dead person is imposing their taste on someone just because they leave a gift in their will.

I will be leaving my jewelry to relatives in my will.
I think it's quite distateful to say I'm "imposing my taste" on them by dying.
  • I recommend the Goldsmith outlets too.

I have a Tag watch that was considerably cheaper than high street ... and the outlets will discount too ;)

Fair enough, I obviously don't " get it ", but it is a pleasure to have a reasoned debate without any nastiness, I appreciate that.

    :D

Lol, my quartz watches keep better time than my automatics

In response to the warranty debate, I think its very rare that you ever need to make a claim on a Swiss watch, anything that packs up after 2 years (the manufacturers duration) is usually not manufacture related and more to how its been worn/treated.

Having said that Cartier are French, so instead of packing up it will simply attempt to block the Channel Tunnel and refuse to work more than 35hrs each week.
  • I have a Tag that I have owned for 12 years now, and it's a great watch. I also now own a Christopher Ward Malvern automatic, which I bought as a dress watch as I wanted something less sporty. The thing is, it's now replaced the Tag as my preferred watch, there's just something very cool about it, and I love the glass back that shows off the automatic movement. If you're not necessarily into the brand thing but want a genuine high quality watch (Swiss movements, sapphire crystal glass etc), I'd recommend checking them out.

Also, Ebuyer are doing some very good deals on Reactor watches - I just bought one of these, they were doing them for £59 last month. It's a seriously solid watch with a no-quibble 2 year guarantee. I'm told it has a Citizen movement, so should do well. I think I'm getting into watches...:D

PS: One of the chaps on the Christopher Ward forum was interested in a £4000 Breitling until he discovered that apparently the actual movement on which it's based costs just $170...
