Claiming insurance for lost wedding ring

My wife and I recently attended a wedding and at some point during the day both engagement ring and wedding ring slipped off my wife's finger unnoticed. We found the engagement ring in the hallway of the hotel we were staying at but despite the best efforts of hotel staff frantically emptying hoovers and searching through bed linen, we were unable to find the wedding ring.

I have two queries I need help with:

Is it possible to claim for the loss of the ring on our home contents insurance even if it was lost away from home?

Do providers normally stipulate a time limit within which to submit a claim?

I have checked the policy and there is neither mention claiming for items lost away from the home or of a time limit within which to make the claim.

Would appreciate any advice or guidance from anyone who might have experienced this.

Personal possessions away from the home is usually additional cover on top of a standard policy.

Who is your insurer? How much is the ring worth?

  • Mildred1978,

Thanks for quick reply. My insurer is Select & Protect. I'll have another read of the terms but can't see anything yet.

The ring will cost £500 to replace.

Which level of cover do you have?

  • What is your excess on your policy? With many policies now having excesses of a couple of hundred pounds you should certainly check that it is economically beneficial to claim and lose your NCD/ claims history for the next 3-5 years -v- paying for it yourselves
