Publish own child's book

My seven year old daughter loves to write short stories and poems. I thought it may be a good idea for Christmas if I could get them published into a properly bound book for her which may spur her enthusiasm for writing.

I have looked on the web but all self publishing sites seem to be for anyone wanting to publish works to sell. I'm only after one copy, not loads.

I have printed the stories off myself and tried binding with plastic combs etc but wanted a more professional look. Something she could keep.

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

  • What you are looking for I think is hardbound printing - talk to a local printer as they may be quite limited to the style/type/colour used.

This shouldn't be very expensive, but do go into one of the print shops near you and compare the different finishes that are available.

Also, there seem to be regular vouchers and offers for "photo books", maybe speak to one of these companies to see if they can help.

  • Try http://www.blurb.co.uk/. It's a self publishing site, but you only have to buy one copy of your book. I haven't used them, I just heard their founder interviewed on Radio 4 recently. There's a new customer discount and cashback available through QuidCo.

Could you save the work she does as an image file (scan them) and make them into a photo book :) That might even work out cheaper... :)

I was going to say photo book, can often get codes etc, I got one via Groupon a while back for £9 should have been £50 and they ave been sending offers ever since.

You could also type into the book as well as scan or add relevant pictures or drawings your DD has done.

We have used them for school projects and they turn out lovely.

With photo books you can copy and paste text too. I did that with a book we made with pictures from our Kenyan honeymoon. We used Bob's Books - expensive compared to some but by far the best quality ones I've seen! But yes, photo books might be the way to go.
