    It's been pretty well disturbed, but testing still remains the only way to be 100% sure. I'd be getting a sample sent as a priority.

    Fair point, if undisturbed then yes it is generally fine to leave in situ as long as it is clearly identified, but since the OP stated that it had collapsed I assumed that it was pretty 'disturbed' and if it is asbestos then it will need to be removed and disposed of correctly which will be costly.

    That would appear to be the back of a sheet of Masonite hardboard (the brown 'woven' pattern), with a layer of coarse plaster and a layer of finishing plaster on top, painted.
