Hi everyone,
Just needed some advice on getting public liabilty insurance so my wife can start trading as a beautician.
Does she need to show any qualifications/certificates to get it?
She's actually studying for an NVQ, but wanted to start trading on the side to get more experience is this possible?
thanks

I think most insurers will require her to hold suitable qualifications for the activities she wants cover for.0

When she looks at quotes make sure it includes "Treatment risks" and also make sure they cover everything she will do and is likely to branch out into the future.
Many exclude nail technician or nail work so read the cover0 -
Generally speaking there is just a general requirement to be suitably qualified. If you hold something above the ordinary in terms of qualifications which would mean your safer rather than you can take on more advanced, thus higher risk, work then it can be worth checking.
My business insurance is hard to place as I work in insurance and so effectively whoever sells it to me is insuring their competitors and the values involved could easily be massive. Whilst a few beers smoothed my premiums out with the company I eventually went with the company that came second did want to see my CV, copies of all my qualifications, references etc0 -
thanks all,
do you think she actually needs to get the insurance?
but i know its a risk.. so stupid to ask i guess0 -

Definately, beauticians generate a lot of claims typically treatments causing reactions with customers and the chemicals damaging property.
You need a good policy and for it to include treatment risks0 -
Its not a legal requirement so ultimately up to her.do you think she actually needs to get the insurance?

Is she a sole trader? If she is then there is no "company" and so if she were sued for causing injury then everything that she personally owns (including her home etc) could be at risk to meet her obligations in paying compensation.
As has been said, it is a fairly high risk industry and of cause there doesnt actually have to be negligence to actually trigger a claim against her and the cost of defending claims can be a lot even if they turn out to be groundless.0 -
Has she got cover for the public liability yet? Also, if she's thinking of employing people in the future it will become a legal requirement for her to get employers liability. I'd recommend looking round for brokers who will get her insured properly0

A proportion of her clients will be professional claims seekers. We have had customers who have deliberately contrived a minor accident in order to claim damages for vague injuries, and employees who have carefully chosen a moment to step off a tailgate clumsily or a shelf ladder to slip. Strangely, this only happens when there are no witnesses around. Even if the claims are completely bogus, can you afford to go to court to defend it? Do you mind the adverse publicity?
Definitely she needs insurance. Then WHEN someone claims, you just pass it to the insurer and forget about it. They will almost invariably settle it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
