laptop only gets to sony vaio screen then just sticks and has a beeping noise

went on holiday in june, great sun and night life, anyways getting to the point. i came home and went to go on the laptop only to discover it only loads to the 'sony vaio' screen then makes a beeping noise this noise is repeatedly. i have no idea what so ever has happend and neither does the person looking after my house and who was using my laptop. im not sure if its a hard ware problem or somethings been deleted out of it? pleaseee comp masters i need your help on this:(

OK, the beeping is an error code. If it is one repetitive beep with the beep around half a second long it is likely to be a memory error. Removing the memory and re-seating it back in the slot usually cures it.

It could be a number of things.
If it is showing a display, its unlikely to be memory. It could possibly be overheating. Do you hear the fans start up when you press the power button? Does an error message display on the screen? Some laptops have a protection mechanism so they don't start up if the fans are not spinning.

Any signs of spillage on the keyboard? If so this can kill the keyboard and cause this system to 'freak out'.
