What the hell is this smell?

This morning a faint poo like smell was present in the landing near the W.C. By mid day it was much stronger and I could smell it from the hallway directly under.

It then faded and I couldn't smell a thing...

Just nipped into my bedroom and the smell now seems to be in there instead,near the doorway but I cannot figure out exactly where it's coming from and cannot smell it close to the floor.

I originally thought it may have been to do with the toilet being slightly blocked a couple of times over the past week due to DS shoving so much toilet roll down it.The smell has completely gone from the toilet though and the landing and hallway.

Any ideas?Moving on Friday so don't need any problems right now!

Use air freshener...don't use the loo till you leave and just leave the problem for the next occupier. If the water is running then just I'd just leave it.

It sounds like the vent in your soil pipe is sticking, which is why it comes and goes. Depending on how old your house is, and where the soil pipe vents to, it should be relatively easy for a plumber to fix. If its moved to your bedroom, it more than likely goes up through the roof, in which case it's just a matter of accessing loft to change it. Things like that don't tend to go away, so it will need fixing.

Aside from not using the toilet for a few days I quite like that plan:rotfl: Can't see it going down to well though LOL

Have to say it was worse when I had the heating on earlier.Probably due to where the pipes run

If I call someone to take a look in the morning what are they likely to do/check etc?Have to ask as my severely autistic son is off school at the mo and I've only got tomorrow and Thursday to pack (very difficult with Ds home) and I don't want anything invasive stressing him out and making everything a million times harder!

Equally,I don't want sewer gas lol

That is most likely the cause and if it meant that the pan filled up to the rim when flushed you may have had some seepage from the pan connector. You should check that the pan connector hasn't been pushed off slightly leading to further seepage in clearing the blockage and you or OH can do that it doesn't need a plumber. Once you are happy that thats OK and you haven't got a leak then time is a great healer because the stuff may have run about a bit under your floorboards and once it dries out then the pong will go. I do think you have a moral obligation to try and cure it before you move out though.

Yep,the toilet filled to the top a few times-took some fiddling with the toilet brush to get the water back down. I don't have an OH anymore (shame,as my enjoyment of DIY doesn't extend to toilets!) but will take a look.The toilet is a bit loose aswell due to Ds wriggling so much on it *rolls eyes* so I'd be fiddling with it anyway I guess lol

I'll definitely sort it before I go.

Only thing that's puzzling me is the smell seems to come more from the sides of the room with no smell down on the floor :-S Also,the waste pipe from the toilet leads to the front of the house (with internal pipe) and my bedroom is opposite the W.C (back of house).If any of that makes any difference to possibilities?

Can't clearly visualise the run but if there has been some seepage and its run along the underside of the pipe then that may account for the smell moving about. That does suggest that a check that the pan connector is properly on the pan would be a good plan.

Well,it's definitely loose.Not certain it could've seeped under the floorboards though.

The smell is milder at the mo...although I have a rather blocked runny nose LOL
