Detached brick garage, can we put a first floor over it?

Hello, we have a brick detached garage and wondered if we could put an extra floor over it, with a flat roof so we don't take too much light away from the garden. Hubby wants to use it as a workshop, but thought that maybe, in the future, we could turn it into a bedsit kind of a space, don't know really, just trying to give ourselves as many options as we can.

Anyone ever done this?
:hello:  please play nicely children !

It depends on whether the walls are strong enough. Are the walls single or double bricks?

You really need an expert to look at it.

You will need planning permission. Don't be surprised if this is refused.

we looked to do this, more often than not the foundations are not suitable, so you either have to have pillars placed in the garage to take the weight, or all knocked down, new foundations, and rebuilt! we was quoting £45000-£50,000 !!!
