I suggest you go down to your local currys/pcworld have a play with the demo ones and see which you find easiest to use.
£400 will buy a new Ipad 4 this arguably best tablet in the world, but for value for money Nexus 7 starting at £159 is a good buy although it's smaller than the Ipad.
Tablets are simple to use toddlers aged 2/3 can even use them.0 -
If you are only going to use it at home, then all tablets have wi-fi and will connect to your home network.
If you want to use it with internet connectivity outside the home, then you will either need to access wi-fi hotspots, or buy a tablet with 3G built in, typically about £100 extra. You will then need a PAYG or contract data deal with one of the mobile providers.
The first decision is OS: whether you want Mac iOS or Android. Then size.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Thank you Smithers1981. I appreciate your reply - maybe I should move out of my limited comfort zone. I have a few more weeks to explore things so I'll definitely look at the Ipad you recommend.

Thank you macman. Although I would use it mainly at home I would like the option of being able to use it on the odd occasion when I am out or on holiday etc.
Smithers1981's idea about trying some out at somewhere like PC World is good and I now know what important things to look out for - I'm making a note of them. I really appreciate all the helpful information I'm being given.

But please don't even consider actually buying it at PCW.
If you only want infrequent use then you will need to either use wi-fi hotspots, or pay the extra for a 3G tablet and PAYG 3G data charges. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Where would you buy one from, macman? I would probably need some kind of technical support or pay for help to get it up and running - including connecting to my wireless router etc.
Thank you very much0
