A basic cheap(??) monochrome laser printer?

Options
Hi

I've tried searching the web for guides to find a good deal on a printer for quite a while, bearing in mind the cartridges are most important when it comes to getting a printer.

I'm still lost.

Could someone tell me what brands I should be looking at for basic black and white printing printers only, medium quality dpi, and how I can compare the prices of the cartridges?

If so thanks,

J

  • Anywhere near IT auctions? HP 3005DN will typically go for a tenner or less. A new aftermarket toner that'll do 20,000 pages is £50-£60.

That model of printer is an office printer and will do printing on both sides without needing to feed the paper back in, is able to be networked and will last for years.

Look at the budget Samsungs, Costco had some at about £70 recently.

You might want to look at the Brother range. We got a nice duplex one recently and are very happy with it - bar the cost of the toner cartridges (which seem to last for ages, fortunately).

IJT give 'em away free with a few print cartridges......
  • I've checked out a few cheap printers recently. In every case the cost of a replacement toner was higher than the cost of the printer, making the printer essentially a throw-away item. I would hate taking a succession of serviceable printers to the dump, so before you buy make sure there are cheap compatible toners available for your chosen model.

You are missing the point there. The printers are sold at a loss to hook you into buying their ink.
Exactly the same principle applies to razor blade systems.

I bought a wireless Brother mono laser printer 39.99 after a 10 pound discount from Argos. Compatible toner is 18.99 off eBay

A good site if you're thinking of DIY refills http://www.refilltoner.com/ - I've successfully used their stuff on a couple of old Samsungs (no chip resets needed).
  • Apologies I meant something different - cheap printer meaning cheap overall cheap printer hardware and cheap on the refills, so mainly meaning the refill cartridges,

    Replies noted though, thank you.
