Holiday in between UK and Australia

The problem is that Australia is a very long way away from the UK: therefore if you do not travel long-haul then the friend will have a very long journey.

I do agree that France and Spain (and Italy and Switzerland) would be great destinations for an Easter holiday, but obviously that would only work if your friend is willing to travel a very long way. Otherwise, a long-haul journey is unavoidable. Thailand is fairly close to the half-way point, and is a wonderful place for a holiday. The same is true of nearby countries such as Malaysia and parts of Indonesia and the Philippines. Travel times to the Far East are similar to the US West Coast, but on the whole the airlines serving the Far East provide a higher level of service and comfort in economy.

Other half-way points worth considering include South Africa and the Seychelles.
