Thanks Figment. I ran both the diagnostic tools last night.

The dell driver - it gave the option to save, which i clicked, and it said all files unzipped. It didnt ask me to restart or install anything. I restarted anyway to see if anything changed but the only thing different was that the computer started in mute. Still no sound (after mute taken off, obviously!)

I then went back to device manager and the date of the driver hasnt changed?!

After downloading and unzipping the DELL driver, a setup wizard should have started.

Right, so when i double click on the dell one it says select the folder you want to unzip the files to. C:\Dell\Drivers\7RDWC\ is already in there. if i go into that location, i should be able to run the unzipped file. right?

tried to do a screendump of the folder but it wont let me

Which suggests your sound driver is probably ok. Could be hardware or an output/source selection problem.

Have you tried it with headphones?
