HDMI problem with PC

Options
Just tried to connect an HDMI cable from my PC to the monitor. When I connect the cable I lose all my icons and therefore can't do anything, when I pull the cable out the icons return and all is fine again. What am I doing wrong, layman's answer if possible as IT numpty, thanks.
It's someone else's fault.

At a guess, the screen resolution is changing when you use the HDMI cable, so your icons are disappearing off the edge of the screen
How do I add a signature?

I appear to have solved the problem. I disconnected the DVI cable and the HDMI works fine now. Didn't realize you had to disconnect one for the other to work !!

Return to what? Another monitor? Can you tell us a bit more about your setup please?
It sounds to me that your HDMI-connected monitor is being used as an extended desktop. Your primary desktop screen should still be somewhere though!

Glad you got it sorted. You can usually connect the different inputs to different computers and switch between them. Maybe yours wasn't switching automatically to the HDMI input?

Don't really understand computers but your comment "wasn't switching automatically" makes sense. I've only got an HDMI connection now so is that OK for everything?
