I inititally read it as the OP giving money to their family to help out (ie money the student was going to live on). Now I've reread it it appears that perhaps the family was going to pay the OP's accomodation costs and now can't (for whatever reason).
Obviously it makes a difference to how the OP handles things if it was their money they are now giving away or whether a family member had initially offered to pay the rent.
The easiest options perhaps on the family are for the OP to get a job or suspend uni for a while (depending on what has caused this situation).

Sorry for the confusion. As I live in an extended family, my family was going to foot the bill.

They've asked for documentary evidence - which I can easily provide.

Look at university hardship funds, even state benefits and hardship payments. Again you need to address your landlord in writing.

How on earth did you advertise and find a new tenant and then they put them in a different room though? This doesn't seem fair at all and may be worth a complaint about if you feel you fullfilled your side of the bargain.

I would imagine there must have already been an empty room in the accommodation so rather than put the new person into the OP's room they put them in the empty room so as to get an extra rent payment coming in. It certainly unfair to the OP but from the university's point of view it made financial sense.
  • I'm afraid you have to find another tenant (and no the university does not HAVE to accept them). Many halls have a clause that they will fill empty rooms first before allowing swaps etc.
