10" tablet HELP

Options
Hi there Techie types! Can you help me?

DD (14yrs old) has asked for a tablet for Christmas, now my budget for her is £200 this year, which I don't really want to spend ALL on a tablet.

Have searched ebay, amazon and various reviews has anyone got any advice on the best tablet for my money??

I am tempted to ask her to downgrade to a 7" that way I may get her more tablet for my money, but her first choice was a laptop so the tablet is a kinda downgrade already.

Why didn't anyone tell me (FORCEFULLY) what a black hole for money kids are!!!!!

:j

All advice appreciated.

iPad mini is launched this evening, so you can compare it with Nexus 7, Kindle Fire and the like.
14 eh? Should be discovering boys soon then you will have something to worry about.
Wait 'til she wants a car, deposit on a house, money for the wedding.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

The best bet for your budget is an Android powered device. Currently 7" models with multi touch and capacitive screens are around £100.

I have used a 7" model for about a year, but would rather have something a bit bigger. My understanding is that 10" models will be circa £120 come November.
I suspect they will be all over ebay in a few weeks.

Somewhere like gadgetfreakz has 8" tablets for under £100. A drop of £60 in the last couple of months, so expect bargains.

Thank you both so much! I didn't realise that the I pad Mini was so close to unveiling!!!

I shall bide my time and keep looking and waiting.

For myself I had almost decided on a Nexus or a Kindle Fire HD, but any recommendations will be well received.

  • Wait a bit... rumour is that Google has a 10 inch (Nexus 10) android tablet waiting to be released on the 29th of Oct. Also, they'll be boosting the Nexus 7 up to 32GB
  • Well for university I've bought myself a samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0 for £200 from pcworld/currys... Seems like a bargain purchase.
  • you can get a chromebook for around £200 almost a laptop and good compromise.

The trouble with a lot of 7" tablets is these are a 16:9 screen ratio. Screen size is measured diagonally so they are quite wide but not very tall displays. I have an 8" one :embarasse and although it sounds like an inch isn't going to make much difference it is also 4:3 ratio so much 'squarer' this gives you a lot more screen than you would expect, yet it is still compact enough to carry around easily. A lot of people have found the Ployer Momo8 ICS to be excellent, powerful and extremely well specified - comes with the very latest Android system. You would be pushed to find much better value (only £112) for decent quality like this..

(avoid the cheaper sellers on amazon shipping straight from China, best to pay a few £ more and make sure its one of the UK shipping sellers like Dracotek) only because if it arrives damaged in the post its a lot easier to sort out.

Yes google nexus will be stopping the 16gb version and producing 32gb for the same price, kindle fire does look nice, but both DO NOT have micro sd slot or hdmi output.

Acer do a tablet called iconia A110, same fast processor as the Nexus, but does have micro sd card slot and hdmi output and latest android jelly bean, but the screen is not brilliant. £180 on ebuyer, but does have £30 cashback at the moment.

There are so many tablets on the market at the moment, so is not the easiest task to choose between them.
