AMEX and Stolen DSLR Camera

Ive just come back from my 2 week holiday to Turkey but it all became sour when someone stole my camera and my lense from beside (placed in a camera bag) me at a restaurant.
I paid through my AMEX gold cashback card.
The AMEX terms suggest it excludes electronics and electronic equipment. Does this come under electronics?
It was within there 90 day policy.
The cost was over £600 so its really upsetting.
I didnt bother with the Turkish police because I thought they would be useless.
Would AMEX compensate me for this?
Many Thanks

If something is stolen and you want to make any kind of insurance claim, you MUST report it to the local police. If you have returned from Turkey already, I fear that you will have to bear the loss yourself.0 -

A DSLR is likely to be considered an 'electronic device'."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

I assume this to be true as almost all insurance I've seen has these terms even if the local police would do nothing (as they would in this country really) you just need the report, almost all require it to be within 24 hours or similar time frame.
Also certain insurances policies only cover loss/theft when it happens in the UK although being Amex I assume this not to be the same as it's marketed as a more international/travel brand.0 -
Unfortunatly American Express wouldn't cover it. Only the platinum and centurion card covers stolen electronics.0

If you weren't sure that Amex would cover it it would have made sense to ensure it was covered on your Travel insurance policy - was it? Sadly, it doesn't matter now because of your failure to report it to the police, I'm afraid you've lost your money.0

I didnt have travel insurance because I payed everything through my AMEX which I thought was sufficient.
It looks like AMEX dont seem to cover much and is pointless in some sense.
I guess ive lost out on this one

Points to remember for next time:
a) always check the cover
b) get a police crime number because, no matter how good your cover is, you can't claim without one!
Having said that, were you in Turkey with a tour operator? Did you report it to them? If so, and they didn't tell you to report it to the police, then you may have a case against them for negligence. Just a thought.........Practically Perfect in Every Way......:grinheart0 -
No i didnt book with a tour operator0
-
would it be covered under your home insurance, we are covered for up to 1500 for goods outside the home0

you need to make sure you have proper travel insurance not just for items being stolen or flights delayed but for medical expenses. In Turkey you wouldn't be covered by any EU reciprocal agreements.
I think you've lost the chance to claim for the camera because you didn't get a crime reference from the Police regardless of anything else but really you've learned a valuable lesson. You must have travel insurance, if only for the medical cover.I'm a qualified accountant but please make sure you get expert advice as any opinion is made in a private capacity.
