RFID Reader/Writer & read-write tags

Hello,
I want to get some RFID tags and use them to store information for some items. Where can I get an RFID reader/writer and some tags for a reasonable price? (Under £60?) This is for a student project, so I don't have a lot of money to spend.
I'd like it to have USB so i can connect the writer to my PC.

There are also a number of NFC enabled phones that will read/write RFID tags. Is it possible you could borrow one from someone? Again, as bluesnake said, they need to be compatible tags.0 -
If you can modify your project to use just read only, and store the data in a lookup table, then you can get a reader for £6 and tags less than £1.
I bought this reader for playing with

Have found this barebones read/write

By compatible do you mean they have to be the same frequency? i.e if the reader is 13.56Mhz, I can only get 13.56Mhz tags? Or is there something else I need to take into consideration as well?If you can modify your project to use just read only, and store the data in a lookup table, then you can get a reader for £6 and tags less than £1.
I want to write data to the RFID tag specifically so I can store data on it and avoid using lookup tables. Otherwise, I might as well use barcodes?0
