For a laugh I went to one of the comparison websites to check my house insurance.
I see quite frequently on SOA's comments like you can get that cheaper, too expensive etc and always thought to myself that the posters who comment on those would have a hissy fit about mine, but it's actually only £36 dearer than what we pay at the moment and I would say that we have better additions for our money.
We currently pay £78 per month for house and contents but the house is valued at 650k and the rebuild value is circa 550k. We also have 100k of contents and are able to have accommodation for us (2 adults and 1 child) and my parents (who live in the wing) should the house burn down. It also covers freezer contents and has £100 excess.
The cheapest was Green Insurance at 899 pa but I haven't looked into whether the cover is the same.
I'm actually quite happy now as it's not excessive in comparison to UK companies.
What sort of price to others have for what value

Home insurance is a very complex product, in comparison to Motor, and therefore simply judging premium -v- sum insured can give very misleading results.
For example with a previous property there was a small leak behind a kitchen unit. As the kitchen was no longer made and highly specialist the whole was replaced with the only payable being the fifty quid excess - total claim was about 15k. A budget policy wouldn't have covered tracing or accessing the leak and would only have covered the replacement of the two units actually damaged by the leak and not the rest of the kitchen so probably circa 1k covered and 14k for us to find or live with a kitchen with two non matching units in the middle0
