Thinking of self employment but worried

Hi
I am currently employed fully time in a permanent but low paid job. I also receive working & child tax credits.
To improve my situation I am thinking of setting up my own business and have been offered work until the end of the tax year which will bring in considerably more than I currently earn.
I would like to make this move and get off in work benefits but I am worried what will happen if the business fails. Obviously, I will try very hard to obtain more contracts but if this does not work will I be able to claim JSA or other benefits?
I don't want to appear pessimistic or defeatist before I even start but it is scary giving up even a low paid job in this financial climate
Thanks
