Hot water / boiler problem - heeeeelp!

For some reason we cant get hot water without the heating being on now - this is doing my nut in, anyone know what the problem might be (we have independent controls and it has worked properly in the past) - also any recommendations for a good gas man in NW London appreciated!

Cheers

  • I assume you havn't got a combi boiler....

So to me it sounds like a time clock problem.....
Or maybe a motorized valve problem... Faulty micro switch in the motorized valve.

It sounds like the 3 port valve or motorised valve may be faulty, not the time clock. A quick way to check this would be to alter the wiring in the back of the timeclock so that the heating time operates the hot water/vise versa.
Only attempt this if you feel confident with electrics and don't forget to isolate the electrics first.
  • cheers chaps, yes had a quick chat with someone and looks like valve issue, need to find a decent boiler man now!

The 3 port valve can usually be over ridden manually by moving the indicator arm on the valve. The operators are dead easy to replace. And any competant diy person should be able to do it. As long as the valve underneath is free and moving you only need the motor and it is usually a case of removing the two mounting screws and replacing with a new one. If you get the same make and model the wiring colour codes should match and be easy to replace one for one. Mine took 20 mins.
