I think they picked up your stress! your toddler was unwell and you were naturally stressed and maybe panicking a bit? or they picked up the toddlers distress and reacted to that?
Keep them apart until your toddler recovers! Cats can be very empathic - and the disagreement between them could just be the stress made one cat very nervy! and the other cat responded by getting angry. as the home situation calms down so should the cats!

Thanks everyone.
Problem still ongoing. Still having to keep cats separated which is very difficult. Younger cat back to usual lovely self, but dominant cat is still very aggressive and so can't let her near younger cat. Eagerly awaiting arrival of feliway in the hope that helps.........

I don't know much about cats but we had the same problem with our dogs and one of them had to be re-homed I'm afraid (with MIL so not far away). Perhaps you might have to consider this.
