Window Installation - FENSA certificate

Hi there, hopefully someone out there will have the answer to this. In November 2005 we had all of our windows and doors replaced with double glazing. We did not receive a FENSA certificate at the time (I did not know that we should have but have since found out that we should). We are in the process of remortgaging our house and have been told by our lawyers that the Nationwide need a copy of the FENSA certificate. I contacted the window company today and they told me to contact FENSA. Called FENSA and they say that the installation has not been registered. Got back to window company and they have told me that the company who installed my windows went into liquidation and they bought the name. They said that I would need to contact my Local Council and get them to send someone from Building Regulations to come to my property, check the windows and sign them off. I can then contact FENSA to let them know this has been done. They have said that some of the old clients were passed on to the liquidators but they just happen to still have my file as it was not one passed over.
i need to know if this information is correct. Surely if they have taken over the company it is there responsibility to do this. The same people are working there who were there before. I think they are just passing the buck but am not sure where i stand with this. Can anyone advise?
Sorry this is so long but have tried to get in as much information as possible.

FENSA is a company that handles self-certification of fenestration (windows and doors).
You DO NOT need a FENSA certificate. What you do need, is a certificate that is issued by a suitably competent person/body to certify that the work done meets building regulations.
Your easiest option would be to call Building Control at your local council and ask them to do an inspection. Fees are about £70.0 -
Surely if the company is registered and you have a receipt then you have the evidence required?Nothing to see here, move along.0

Age old scam with double glazing and other companies.
The directors put the old company into liquidation and start up a new one with the same people and assets but legally avoid responsibility for the old companies
commitments.
If i were you i would go to my local council. They will send someone around to inspect the installation and assuming its ok, they will certify it meets building regs. It should cost you around £150. Nationwide will accept this certification for your remortgage.0 -
Same thing happened to us,we were told by the company installing our windows that they were guaranteed under Fensa and we would get our certificate.Never did and when it came to sell the house we had to phone Fensa who said the company was under Fensa , but only after they had finished our job, as Fensa was just coming in then in April 2002 there had been confusion and he hadn';t got his paperwork in in time, and so as he wasn't registered with Fensa at the start of our job then we would NOT get the certificate!!!!
Very unfair!!!!
So we did indeed have to apply to building regs at our local council and they came out and checked all the windows, which have to have the right vents now and the right k glass.
We had 9 windows and 2 doors and it cost us £195 for their certifcate.
Good luck0 -
Interesting stuff. I've just had three windows fitted by a FENSA approved installer, but they didn't make any mention of a FENSA certificate, just their 10 year guarantee. I assume that the FENSA cert is an additional item (as required if Building Regs have not been completed)?
Thanks in advance for your help.0 -
thanks to everyone who has replied. I am so peeed off with this. The company who have apparently only bought the name of Stormglaze say that they can do nothing about it but they stil lhave the same people working there and surely it is still their responsibility. I think they are just trying to wash their hands of it because it is such a hassle. Will let you know how i get on with it all.
