Experiences of JSA with a mental health problem?

Long story short, I am looking to the time when I am ready to go back to work, and am confused about claiming JSA with a health condition and the effect this has on expectations of a claimant and possible sanctions.
I read somewhere that you have to be able to work 40 hrs a week and have a 'reasonable chance' of finding work unless you are severely disabled, when this rule is waived.
I am incredibly worried as there is quite a difference between being able to do some jobs, possibly part-time, and being able to do any job for 40+ hrs a week with long distances to travel.
I was hoping to go self-employed but if universal credit comes in it will only be possible to start this by signing on and declaring any money I make as I start up. (Due to tax credit changes.)
I am really concerned that my positive, thinking-about-going-back-to-work plans may go horribly wrong and end up with me relapsing and back on ESA.
So does anyone know any more about JSA if you declare a health problem, especially a mental health one? I will be on the waiting list for psychotherapy or already receiving it if that makes any difference (esp. for jobs that are same day as therapy appointment.)

My basic advice would be to ask to see the Disability Employment Advisor at your local jobcentre... they're specially trained for this area of disabled people and working.

Thanks, Mutley.
I was thinkg that myself, but am worried if I make an appointment it will trigger an ESA medical!0
