I have made the mistake of helping someone get a good deal on a dell machine.
They bought a Dimension PC E520 running vista. The BT broadband when live yesterday, and runs very slow (and apparently much slower on certain websites).
I have not see the problem or machine yet, but as I recommended the PC I will be expected to have look.
They are using a Broadband Broadband BT Voyager 220v ADSL and using the Ethernet cable (not USB).
Apparently they spent about an hour today talking to BT tech, who took control of the machine remotely to sort it out. The BT guy eventually said that it is a fault with the machine and it is not "configured correctly".
This is a new Dell machine. Any ideas?

I would use the Dell Restore (CTRL f11 on boot) to take it back to factory settings and get rid of the BT "fix"
then just set the Pc connection up by connecting it to the ethernet port WITHOUT using the BT CD (it's only required for USB connection)
should work with no problemsEx forum ambassador

Thanks for the replys. Apparently the BT guy did a couple of speed tests.
I'll probably will do what you say and start again from scratch.0 -
a simple restart of the router/modem may work as well, also worth going into it and turning off it's built in Firewall, the Visat one is adequate for now (but dells normally come with McAffee , which should do the job)Ex forum ambassador

This one didn't come with McAfee. I believe he has AVG and ZoneAlarm installed.
I will go over there and turn off the Vista firewall, and reset the router as suggested.
Thanks again.0 -
did'nt know ZA worked on Vista ??
thought tey were still Beta testing one ??
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/vista.jsp
zonealarm free
Attention Vista Users: ZoneAlarm is not currently compatible with the Vista operating systemEx forum ambassador

Oh, didn't realise that.
I just checked with them. Apparently they ARE using McAfee (only one month trial) so have not attempted to install ZA on it.
I've asked them to check if the Vista Firewall is turned on.0 -
Apparently the problem was the phishing website checker that is with MacAfee antivirus.
Seems that that was not working correctly with the Vista machine/BT Broadband.
With the phishing option turned off there was no problems with speed after that.0 -

Yeah, the Phishing Filters are a pain in the backside, not only on Mcafee. Ive turned it off on my laptop as well and websites load alot quicker.0
