Internet Optimizer ? anything to worry about ?

For about a month now, there have been times when I clic to a site, that a page comes up, headed Internet Optimizer and I haven't thought anything about it.
But, whilst surfing and landing on one site, a box came up and suggested that "they" had detected I'd become infected with Internet Optimizer, something that introduces pop-up's, (but I've got a pop-up stopper so I wouldn't know about that), records account details and generally watches where I surt, ie spyware.
Now, does anyone know anything constructive about that?, does the name mean anything ? is it simply a catch to get me to download something and pay for it which is worthless?.
I'd appreciate any info please.

pest patrol has some info:

I'd try "spybot search and destroy" or "adaware" from http://www.download.com rather than trying to manually remove it.
The best thing for this type of thing was cwshredder:

You may want to try this first (It takes seconds to download and use) but it is not updated anymore and might not tackle it if it's recent0 -
What a nightmare !. My machine started crashing at every opportunity so it went back to the small retail shop where machines are made up etc.
After a great deal of time, they decided to clear the hard drive and start again. I have windows 98 reimstalled and a later version of O/Ex. It's tru I lost a lot of favourites and things I'd downloaded (just in case), which I'd gleaned from freebie discs.
Now the maching is running smooter and faster and I will cease to download anything unless it is REALLY useful. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
