Dont buy a BMW for a first car a go the traditional route of fiesta, polo etc.
Fact is, that is a big car for someone so young.0 -
Not really.
The high price reflects his inexperience. Fact is, he's a high risk of having an accident and injuring/killing someone else, especially with a powerful car.
The insurance covers the risk, not the value of your son's car.:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:A

You will struggle to get that down - a BMW 318 is not a car for a 17 year old lad tbh.
The value of the car will almost be irrelevant - the risk of liabilty to third parties far outweighs the risk of theft/damage to your son's car!0 -
What's wrong in this story is the fact that he's bought the car before finding out that it would cost a ridiculous amount to insure.
Given that it's not exactly a secret that insurance for young male drivers is very expensive because they are so darned risky to insure, I'm not sure what he (or you) were doing in making that choice of car TBH.0 -

Get a different car.0 -
These days, insurance quotes have virtually no correlation to the price of the car, they are a lot more biased towards what the potential for the driver of that car doing damage to other cars / property / people are...
Statistically, a 17 year old driving a BMW with a 1.8 litre engine is more likely to do more damage than a 17 year old driving a 1.1 litre engined car..
I am 26 with coming up to 2 years no claims (touch wood) and even I wouldn't think of buying a 1.8 litre engined car (even if I could afford one) because a) expensive to tax b) expensive to maintain c) expensive to ensure, d) expensive to run (low mpg) e) bad for the environment (although you might not care about this!!)
If he has already brought the car, he has two options 1) sell it and get something smaller or 2) pay up and get used to it....

thanks guys
you see, he knew the price would be high, but initially we would put him on my insurance where it would become £1600 for him.
however having had a word with friends who have done the same i have been advised against it.
therefore he will have to go at it alone.
dont know how it will go down with him selling it for something alot worse...hes been working on it alot recently.0 -

No doubt he will be unwilling to sell it.
But he has to think about it logically, with a view to the long-term. You have to walk before you can run - explain to him that he might have to put up with driving a bit of a banger for a few years. I'm sure a 17 year old lad will find a use for the money he saves in premiums!
Then, once (touch wood) he has built up some no claims discount he'll be able to cover a BMW 318 (or maybe better if he puts money away that he would otherwise have spent on insurance!).0 -
my brother just turned 18 and he bought a 1.3ltr fiesta last week and he got a couple of quotes and cheapest he found (was applying whilst he was 17) was £2300....and that's just on a 5yr old fiesta. good luck
