London Waterloo

I'm looking for some advice on parking in the London Waterloo area.

In a few weeks we'll be spending a weekend in London, arriving mid morning Saturday and leaving mid afternoon Sunday, staying at the Travleodge at London Waterloo. We don't really want to park outside and tube in because we'll have 2 small children + bags so ideally want to park somewhere nearby.

My first option is the surrounding streets, Google Street View shows it as mostly permit holders only between Mon-Fri but no restrictions on the weekends but I'm expecting those spaces to be busy with residents + other weekend visitors so If I can't find a space what other options are in that area? I don't mind paying but obviously prefer the cheapest option.

Have a look on parkopedia http://www.parkopedia.co.uk/
I find it quite good, can give you location of parking bays/meters etc with hours of operation and location of car parks with prices
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

Don't rely on google streetview as it's a few years old and they're recently changed the parking times in the area due to people parking for the Old Vic Theatre

You have to read any parking signs very carefully, you have two councils in the area, Lambeth on the Waterloo side who are incredibly strict and Southwark to the East of the cut who are strict but no where near as strict as Lambeth.

You can park on the single yellow lines in Union Street from 12.30pm on Saturday until Monday morning for free (Opposite the Travel lodge).

I think you can also park at the top end of Kennington Road outside the shops from Friday night.

There's definately free parking in the area at the weekends, just make sure you read the parking signs next to where you're looking to park.

Note Lambeth have lots of cameras monitoring parking and traffic offences, Southwark don't tend to have them.

There's a new Sainsburys Local on The Cut.
  • Thanks Yolina I've been looking on there.

Great advice Dacouch, I also found the Lambeth and Southwark Council websites useful, they have interactive maps with parking restrictions. Your right Southwark seem less strict, mostly restriced parking Mon-Fri, whereas Lambeth seems more restricted, most of their restrictions are Mon-Saturday and some are Mon to Sun.

Thanks for reminding of Kennington Road outside the shops, theres loads of spaces along there and don't think I saw them all in use when I walked along there on a weekend last December. Looks like its limited to 30 minutes mon-fri with no weekend restirction. Thats a good option if I can't find anything closer.

The other option could be to drop the family and luggage off at the hotel and then park a little way away and get the tube back.

The Kennington Road parking is actually in the Bus Lane, you'll see cars parked there, if you read the signs you'll see where you can park. The other side of the road is virtually all Police Parking.

You should find somewhere to park locally, if not as I mentioned you can park opposite the Union Street Travel Lodge on the singles from 12.30pm on Saturday.

Avoid the immediate area around the Old Vic and Young Vic as the restrictions are until late at night to stop the theatre parkers.

It would be worth checking on the TFL site https://www.tfl.co.uk for engineering works on the tube as they often do them on the Northern Line at Waterloo and Jubilee line at Southwark.

It's a very good location and you can walk to many of the tourist sites which is a nice thing to do, the Thames never ceases to amaze me

free 24/7 parking next to waterloo, but get there early. An open parking area is rare in London but just turn into Leake St and take the very first turning on the left. There on the right side up to the barrier are spaces for about 4 cars. Visit the Banski Tunnel while you are there

Other places that were free on weekends were on the roads that pass under the rail network like Centaur St, Virgil St, and Windmill Walk area - Streets off The Cut
