Taking up a tiled kitchen floor - whats best?

Hi, we are having a new kitchen floor fitted (because we are having a cupboard knocked out and incorporated into the new kitchen. Problem is we have ceramic floor tiles fitted in the main part of the room, and these will need to come up, and have the cement chipped off to make way for the new flooring throughout the dining room and new kitchen.

Has anyone any idea what is going to be the best, easiest, most time efficient way of doing this, or is it a job for a professional? Hubby is pretty handy, but is short on free time.

  • Hit them with a hammer to break them first, then use a bolster for the stubborn ones.

If the floor has plywood under the tiles, and the adhesive is stuck solid, you will have a horrible job on your hands, you may have to lift the ply !

    WEAR GOGGLES AND GLOVES
  • Like PL says, wear glasses and gloves!

A cheap SDS drill with rotory stop will make light work of this as on this page- http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/tiling/tile_removal.htm

Get a wide chisel for the sds drill and it will be a piece of cake ;)
