Marble hearth problem!

I have a marble hearth and fire surround. I have noticed that in a couple of places, the smooth marble finish appears to be pitted, as though the smooth finish has been roughened in some way. Obviously I would like to get this sorted, but I am not sure how its happened, or what to do to sort it? Anyone got any ideas?

mines done the same ... just thought I'd tell ya!! does yours look like something has spilt on it and left a mark and you only see in certain lights? I've put candles on top of mine cause nothing was shifting it.You may walk and you may run

It looks as though something has eaten into the finish somehow. When you stroke your hand over it, it feels rough and open, whereas the rest of it feels smooth and silky. Because I don't know whats made it that way, I don't really know how to put it right. Things do get put down on the hearth though, so maybe something has leaked a bit, and thats whats done it. Dunno, ...:hello:  please play nicely children !0
