Refund for elderly in nursing homes

Following the information on Martin's website re getting help with elderly nursing home costs we contacted our local NHS. The questionnaire was completed and sent. Reply received saying a clinician would be allocated to Mum. Followed up with phone call today asking what is happening and were told it could take up to 2 years for this to happen. The nursing home is already receiving the single rate Funded Nursing care monies for the care they give so somebody must have already looked into this case. My husband felt like saying we could be dead before anything is done as we are funding the costs from our savings. Some months ago we were given the option by the home of Mum being transferred to hospital as she has been so poorly. We chose for her to stay at home to finish her days in comfort. Perhaps we should take her to the NHS offices and request they care for her. She has Alzheimers, breast cancer, double incontinence and is completely bedridden since breaking hip earlier this year. Should we change her nationality and get help from all departments. It really is not worth being English and been paying into to The NHS for most of her 90 years.

Are you talking about CHC - Continuing Health Care?

I understand that this can take ages and funding is not always agreed.

There's a massive thread about CHC here:

    I'm querying this:

Why are you funding the care home fees?

If her savings are less than (I think) £14,250 she shouldn't have to pay towards her care but they will take almost all of any pensions etc towards the fees. I think she would be left with £26 per week.

Has your MIL had a financial assessment done?
    Does she have substantial savings?
    Does she own a house?

This is based on what I know about care home fees, I don't know if the rules are different for nursing homes.

I wonder if the fast tracking process would be appropriate?

    See here: http://www.ageuk.org.uk/brandpartnerglobal/oxfordshirevpp/documents/chc%20fact%20sheet%2020%20sept%2010.pdf

To be honest, OP, I would be involving my MP to get things moving.

I also wonder why you are funding your mother's care. Are you talking about a 'top up' fee?

Surely you should not have to fund your mother's care?
