Can anyone tell me what is the recommended thickness for insulation?

I currently have about 350mm thickness, is this enough?


Also, one other question, talking in the pub as men do, I remarked that I have some old carpet & underlay to send to the local dump, one guy told me to lay it in the loft as insulation, would anyone recommend this?

270mm is the current recommended amount.
Old carpet would be better than no insulation at all, but if you put it on top of existing insulation it will compress it and reduce the efficiency.

It's diminishing returns with insulation thickness such that you save very little extra heat loss by exceeding around 270 mm.in the roof. The temptation is to pile it up in the roof as it's the easiest place to add insulation compared, for example, with under the floors.

If you have 100mm on the roof, and none on the floor, then adding another 200mm on the roof will have very limited effect.
Unless you have an extremely well insulated house anyway, the effect of topping up from 200-300mm is likely to be minimal.
Is it worth doing - perhaps, if you have easy access to the attic, and the topup is free, or minimal cost.
Otherwise, other measures are likely to pay back lots faster.
