Can I amend postage after auction end?

I listed something last week and never realised one of the items wasnt in the box at the time I weighed it, and put £4 as postage.
Now its ended and I was packing it up I noticed the missing item and reweighed it, and its now more than doubled in weight, and a carrier requote has more than doubled the postage costs...

With the low price item actually went for, it will mean it will now actually cost me 80p to send the buyer all my items as the combined price and original postage, is less than what the actual postage will be..

Am I allowed to amend the postage in checkout that I send, I am not ripping anyone off as thats what it will actually cost & it was a genuine mistake, or am I obliged to keep the original postage cost??

Personally whether allowed or not I really really wouldn't even suggest this to your buyer. They are entitled to the auction as per the terms under which they won it- adding more postage is likely to give you all sorts of issues- just take the loss this time, don't even mention it to the buyer and kick yurself a bit.

To actually answer your question, physically you can add more postage but according to ebay rules as the item and circumstances has not materially changed you should not change the postage.

We've all done it, on a memorable occasion when I still used to sell books I transposed the European and Worldwide postage- and of course had US buyers snap my stuff up. Cost me money but it taught me to be more careful.

Done it myself and had to eat it. Your buyer might take pity on you but it is not worth asking as most people would find it offensive to be asked.

As Soo said, you're responsible for setting your prices and a mistake that costs you money isn't one you are likely to make again - but the consequences have to be taken on the chin.

I'm with Soolin and Crowqueen its a hard lesson to learn but I think you need to swallow the additional charges. The buyer may not have bid if your postage charges had been higher and its possibly why you got a sale.

I listed a few things at the weekend and luckily re-checked the weight of one otherwise I would have undercharged. In the past I have sent someone some additional postage as they were selling for a charity - they did not ask though!

Could you try another courier to get a cheaper price?
  • unfortunately charging more than stated for postage could open a whole can of worms for you as the buyer agreed to pay the amount stated by you at the time.

I have messed up postage a few times, the worst being when I sold a bundle of clothes for 99p + £3.50 postage and it cost me £6odds to send so I made nothing at all. It doesn't seem a bit lose but as a private seller just trying to clear some space and get some extra pennies it is a lose.

I now weigh items twice because I don't want to loose out again.
I'd take the hit and class it as a lesson learnt

Do you want to post the dimensions and weight of your parcel so people can suggest cheaper carriers?
