DLA Mobility help please

Hoping you knowledgable people can help me.

I am currently receiving mrc and lrm indefinitely but over the last few months my mobility has got much worse and I am finally having to admit defeat and ask for more help.

I dont feel my care needs have increased so can I just reapply for the mobility component or do I have to plough my way through the ridiculously long form again.

Thanks

  • As far as I know you need to go through the whole form again.

Also, remember that the result can take your DLA away from you as well as increase it or leave it the same, which I would be concerned about if I had lower rate mobility.

You can ask DWP to just look at your mobility again, but there is no guarantee that they will do so I'm afraid.
  • I have been in a similar position about 4-5 years ago. I was getting HRC and LRM however my mobility became significantly worse. I phoned DLA and was advised to complete the form asking for a review of the mobility section only and to state on the form that my care needs had not changed. This was the advice I was given several years ago to my situation and it might be different now. I'd suggest it is best if you contact DLA yourself and ask if they are willing to review the mobility component only.

You do need to be aware that when you ask for a review there is always the possibility of the DWP reducing your DLA (the other options being they decide you are already on the correct level, or they decide you meet criteria for the higher level). The length of award might change too. Also if you write something in the mobility section that might influence your level of care needs then the DWP might decide to review the care needs too.

Hi, my husband's situation was similar to saving_pennies.

He was on MRC and LRM, his health worsened and he reached the stage where he couldn't walk more than a few metres. This was 3 or 4 years ago.
His care needs also increased, but not enough to qualify for HRC. So we didn't want this reviewing.

We sought advice before applying. We were told that we could request for only the mobility component to be reviewed, but that there was no guarantee - they could review his care needs if they chose to. If they did review, there was always a risk they could assess him at a lower level.
They said his level of mobility should be expected to remain the same (or worsen) for the next......6 (?) months - same as when you first apply for DLA.

He was assessed as requiring HRM and they didn't look at his care needs again.

Something I've just thought of too. We were advised to describe how my husband walks, the time it takes and the affect this has on him afterwards.

  • Thanks so much for the replies. I rang yesterday, didn't dare before incase they took my details and decided to assess me anyway. I've nothing to worry about with receiving it but don't need the stress.

I was told the same as saving_pennies and MCLF so now I need to decide whether to risk it. She said they may also reduce the term

Why do the dwp make all this so difficult

    Thanks again x

Sigh, yet more scaremongering from Andy. You must be getting due to dump that account and start another one up now?

I asked for the mobility part of my DLA award to be looked at again a few months ago. My care needs haven't changed so I just put "No change" under the care bit and wrote a covering letter saying that, whilst my mobility needs had significantly worsened, my care needs were still the same and hadn't changed. I was aware that they could look at my care needs anyway, however.

I was awarded HRM and my care rate was left the same.

Not sure what you mean by that!

Thank you. That makes me think I might try. Did you send in supporting evidence as well?

Ignore that poster. They're a recurrent troll.

I sent my Blue Badge and details of my GP. They got in touch with my GP to ask about my mobility problems and I was granted HRM on that basis (they also acknowledged that I have a fluctuating condition so some days I might be able to walk a further distance than others, albeit slowly and with my walking stick but that for the most part I meet the HRM criteria).

  • Do trolls not have anything better to do!

Thanks again you've been really helpful. My mobility is very fluctuating I haven't applied for a blue badge, it's another thing I'm trying to get my head round. My gp said she is happy to do a report for me, she is really supportive.
