    Cardboard box? You were lucky!

We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!
How do I add a signature?
  • The new Kindle Fire might be an option? The HD ones out this thursday are £159 but the non HD are £129. I reckon they pretty much do everything the ipad does and the e-reader component is brilliant
  • goodness me, to all the grumpy ppl, well done moneypenny2k for trying to buy your grandson something he wants rather than some overpriced toys he doesn't want. i agree if your children can look after toys etc then they do deserve more expensive items, if you've brought them up not to value anything then they will fling it across the room, maybe pound shop is better for them...

How about buying the kid a £30 Raspberry Pi, get him started like this 7 year old who's made a game using Scratch a free application aimed at school kids, have him build a case for the Pi out of lego

its nice if you have the bits lying around.

but not everyone has a spare...

    USB charger
    USB cable
Some sort of monitor that supports hdmi (or conversion cables) or a tv
    Keyboard
    Mouse
    SD Card
Something to make the case out of..

Its just adds up and if you have to buy you're at the £100 limit anyway.

Don't worry, the OP's son became a £60k/pa programmer because he gave him a BBC Micro or something back in the 80's. It's very likely he has your full list by the box load just lying around the house.

All joking aside, the Raspberry Pi is a very good idea, particularly as the OP wanted to encourage development.
