Npower direct debit

Hi, hoping someone here could give me some insight please?

We have been paying £19 a month direct debit to Npower since 1st September last year and come 1st October this year we have paid £59 and I have no idea why!

I've tried to think through all the reasons it could have happened- was the price we were paying only to last for 1 year, in which case I would think the price would have upped in September not October.

Have they put their prices up? Yes, but we received a letter yesterday telling us this but it wouldn't affect us as we were on a fixed tariff.

Have we been underpaying and they've charged us the backdated amount? No we have had a recent meter reading but it was after we paid the direct debit.

I've tried to log in to see our bill online but they are down for maintenance.

Anyone have any other ideas?

  • I was paying £60/month then this month it was suddenly £86, I phoned up and told them I can't afford to pay this increase. They reduced it to £68 but only after I said I would try to cut down my usage.??!!!
This is getting out of hand (energy bills), I think it is disgusting that people are having to use candles and sleeping bags etc in Britain in the 21st century. I believe energy companies should be profit free surely even shareholders suffer with high bills?

    Have they back billed anything?

Have they been estimating and now a reading has been taken causing a catch up?

Have you been giving readings and has a high estimate now been billed?

Any meter changes? These can go wrong.

    Incorrect input of your readings?

There are many reasons but look at the bills and see if there is a factor that has caused this other than price.

Most likely a catch up bill, only a look at your bill or statement will reveal all.
    Are previous bills estimated?

I think alot has to do with automatic software which kicks in after a meter reading. With npower it jumped from £33 to £65, but two months later it was back to £35.

I thought the real issue is the lack of notice. The leapt in DD came as a complete surprise.
