It may be a pants flask - I have one that is a bit on the naff side and everything seems to be Luke warm even minutes after putting in in when it is molten lave hot when I put it in...
Having been to 2 unis, and studies at several others I have nevre known a uni provide a microwave for students - bt if you get one let me know i'll petition mine for one too... (Maybe a smaller uni would be more inclined - where I am based the 10'000 or so students may well leave it in a bit of a state... )...
However have you tried the chapel or place on non denominational worship... When I went bottom over back and needed to sit for a while as I was so winded they had tea making facilities in there.... (and a little honesty box asking for 20p but they had teabags and biscuits too)...
Have you looked around OFF the campus? I hate the canteen prices, and the fact they are so darn slow - so often take something as I can eat my own food there but there is a mint chippie across the road that does chip butties for £1.20 and as a once a week treat I pop across...
Also if you were to get involved in the running of the student union (not the bar bit) they may have facilities that you could utilise??? The thing is even when I worked in the bar on the small campus I went to previously we sold rat burgers, and would have got less profits to plough back into the clubs the SU ran if we didn't sell them - and what would happen if someone out a fork in the microwave and actually blew it up? (I lived with a guy who actually couldn't make beans on toast)...

University students are all adults. The staff are allowed these facilities so i'm not really sure as to why students aren't. The same principles apply. I'd even offer to keep the facilities clean myself. Cleaning a microwave is such hard work...NOT! :P:idea: Light bulb moment 16/10/12

I'm staff at a university and we're not allowed a microwave or hot food in the office.
If we want hot food we have to eat at a food outlet or sit outside. There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0 -
I suspect it's a crap thermos thing. I had one of those at one point - a £3 Asda job that didn't keep tea warm for 2 hours (honestly, it felt like a hot water bottle). I bought a branded thermos, and it will happily keep my tea warm for 12 hours or more now.
With regards to providing facilities for heating your own food, Manchester SU recently passed a motion saying that the university should do just that. It's only just been passed though, so whether or not it comes to fruition is a separate matter http://manchesterstudentsunion.com/ideas-at-assembly
Alternatively - look just off campus? We've got an excellent £2 panini place which is privately run but on university premises. It's a bit out of the way, but it has something of a cult following. There's also a Morrisons Local on the edge of campus (but again, not immediately obvious) that does hot food including soups and jackets.0 -

I'm at Salford Uni! I am definitely going to put it to the union. Unfortunately our campus is in a bit of an odd place, the closest thing is a Mac D's and to travel any further would just take too long at lunch time. Light bulb moment 16/10/12

These are really good, a friend uses one all the time, I know it is on the expensive side, but will pay for its self in the long term.
http://www.lakeland.co.uk/16339/Thermos-King-Food-FlaskI, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.

Why don't you ask the Students' Union to provide the facilities in the SU area?
Surely that's exactly what they are there for - supporting students??? (and not arranging ways to get hammered, which is what the priority of most SUs seems to be!)
The cafeteria will be run under contract by an outside company - why should they subsidise your dinner and reduce their profits at the same time???British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

As adults I'd expect students to have learned that lesson before going to university...porgie1985 wrote: »I'd even offer to keep the facilities clean myself. Cleaning a microwave is such hard work...NOT! :P
Cleaning a microwave with nasty old baked-on explosion stains is anything but easy.0 -
I'm at Salford uni aswell and I commute. I've found it best to bring in my own stuff like sandwiches or if I want a hot meal then something that can go in a flask. I really do recommend buying a decent flask! The cafe price is outrageous! Even sandwiches are pricey in the Su shop."Nothing, Lucilius, is ours, except time." - Seneca

These look excellent (may get one myself!), just found them a tad cheaper on Amazon (+ free del), love the integrated spoon too! (hopefully the link will work!)

and really, there is absolutely no need for some people's comments for someone asking for advice.0
