Paying eBay fees by PayPal

When you are signing up as a seller and you choose to pay your fees by PayPal, are you automatically asked for your debit card details? eBay doesn't make this clear at all, just directs me to PayPal who want my debit card details with no explanation. I was hoping to pay my fees with funds from sales, especially as today is a free listing day. If they would explain to me what they want and why, I wouldn't have a problem, but I'm finding the whole process fiddly and poorly explained. PayPal already has my bank details and a direct debit instruction, as I've started the verification process, do they really need my debit card details as well?

Thanks

Yes paypal will need you to verify your ID by adding a card.

If your account is not in credit - they will try your cards.

If its in credit - you can pay from sales no problem.

Good thing about that method, is ebay are usually slow taking it . My invoice date is the 15th - payment date is last day of the month - but its usually about the 2nd to 4th when it goes out.

Always best to have the money there on the due date - but it is handy if your short.

I can better that! For some reason about half my fee payments go as an echeque, so eBay have to wait for their money. At least they get to know how frustrating an echeque can be.

  • Thanks for the replies. After extensively searching the Internet, I have come to these conclusions as well. Though you would think they would verify my identity before asking me to choose how to pay my seller's fees. When I signed up, they told me to wait while they verified my identity, presumably from various public and private registers. They didn't ask for any card details then. They could have saved me a lot of confusion by just stating what you have said techspec. Instead they talk mysteriously about pre-approved payments on the PayPal page, nothing at all on the eBay page when they tell me they are sending me to PayPal.

I think they are assuming everyone knows how ebay and paypal work. I'm sure the information is there, but it isn't always there when and where you need it.
