What is there to do and see in Warwick?

Hubby and I are going on holidays, 22 - 28 June 2007, to Warwick but we were wondering what is there to do and see about Warwick? Where should we visit and where should we give a miss? We have out hotel booked and as we are sailing from Ireland we will have our own car with us so we can travel. Do I need to get tickets to go any where and where is best to get them?

Any suggestions?

I liked Warwick castle - quite a lot there to see, but think it cost a bit.

Sorry can't help on much else - only went there for the day when we were staying in Birmingham.

Warwick's main attraction is that my son's at the University of Warwick (actually in Coventry) but I can see that wouldn't draw too many visitors ...

    Warwick Castle
is pricey, newlywed is right, but there is lots to do there - the trebuchet is BRILLIANT and I'm sure I read they were doing sessions where you could learn to be a knight etc. Can't see anything on the website about it. Don't know if you can buy tickets with Tesco vouchers, and of course over the water you probably don't see too many "2-for-1" offers, but we had some the year we went. Or they might have been "kids-go-free" which might not help you much, by the sound of it!

If you like cathedrals, then Coventry Cathedral is a MUST: the pre-war ruins with the new buildings next to it. It might be worth using the Park and Ride buses to get to it: the Inner Ring Road is a bit scary, traffic intersecting at what seems like very high speeds! But maybe I'm just a wimp.

You are of course very close to Shakespeare Country, so all things shakespearean are on your doorstep. If you want to go and see a play at Stratford upon Avon, then that would be worth pre-booking.

    Enjoy!

BTW, if you say what you're particularly interested in, other suggestions may appear. It's also worth looking on the travel and days out board for ideas and offers for specific attractions.

  • I would agree with other posters. Warwick castle is well worth a visit and you can get tickets usung your tesco club points if you save them?

Stratford upon Avon is also a lively and bustling place and well worth a look.

Thanks for all the responses! What is there to do and see for adults at Warwick Castle as I couldn't find much info on their site? If I was to book the tickets on their website what kind of tickets would I need to book as there seems to be a lot of different kinds?

There are tickets for sale on ebay that if one person pays full price for entrance to Warwick Castle another can get in free. I wonder if you had already purchased an entrance ticket could you still use the ebay ticket so it would almost be half price to get in (After paying ebay seller). Does anyone know?
  • Do you have children? If so, there is a great indoor play area called funkymonkeys https://www.funkymonkeys.co.uk and there is a lovely park (St. Nicholas).
There is a nice shopping village called Hatton Country World https://www.hattonworld.co.uk and of course you are a stones throw from Stratford upon Avon (Royal Shakespeare Theatre/ butterfly farm etc). Coventry is 15 miles away with its 2 beautiful cathedrals. There is also nearby Kenilworth Castle and Leamington Spa baths. Warwick also has a racecourse which is very popular.

Warwick Castle (used to work there) is good - but bring your own food, or buy supermarket sandwiches before you go in, as the food is wildly overpriced and not very good! There's a castle walls walk, and lots of waxwork displays (owned by Tussauds Group), as well as gorgeous grounds to wander in. There are usually things like jousting in the summer, or minstrels wandering around. Summer time they used to do evening banquets, which, whilst pricey, are great fun - and you can go in costume, if you so desire!
Birmingham's not that far, and is accessible by train directly from Warwick/Leamington and the Bull Ring centre (near New St station) is well worth seeing, architecturally if not for shopping! There's a great museum near there as well, showing traditional birmingham culture (!) through the ages. The jewellery quarter is quite fun to browse or bag a bargain as well.
Kenilworth Castle is also nearby, and is (I think) free or a lot lot cheaper than Warwick to get in (mainly cos it's a ruin!)
    Have a great holiday.

Warwick Castle has loads for adults. Lots of walls to climb, museums of old life (one a madame Tussads display), dungeons etc. A really nice day out.

Warwick and leamington towns are great for wandering round and shopping. Lots of little independent stores in each.

Stratford obviously is an entire day out. There's also lots of National trust properties around.

Evening ents, you could catch a show in Stratford or NEC? Go to Jools Hollands jazz club in central Brum?

Saturday is Wellsbourne market day...a huge place to pick up anything.
Are you young adults or old? An hours drive from Warwick is Drayton manor, a theme park like Alton Towers.

Let us know what sort of things you like to do on holiday and times you're willing to drive, we'll be able to think of appropriate stuff to do.
