I had a similar problem a while back. I too had considered downloading the genuine advantage doohicky but was concerned it would throw a wobbler and keep telling me that I had pirated software every five minutes. The reality is that my software is completely legitimate. My thinkpad is direct from manufacture, shipped with vista and I downgraded with the supplied discs to XP (because, well you know why!).
I don't think you should worry as long as you have a valid key not being used on any other machine
I know people who often use old OEM keys from old machines destined for the tip and they always work
I doubt if microsoft are too bothered because they no longer support XP anywayIWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0 -
Have read the forum "technie" stuff but can't find answer. Windows XP crashed on me last wk & since then I get "updates" available shield showing. Clicking on it I allow updates automatically & when updates are installed I allow laptop to restart but when it restarts I still get "updates" shield showing "update" available, every single time. It's now driving me mad.A friend said that the "crash"probably put my laptop in "Safe Mode" but this means nothing to me at all., Any help about sorting this out I'd be most grateful.0

Hi, Thrifty-Saver. It's best to start a new thread.
There was an issue with updates last month. Go to the Windows Update, view loaded and you'll probably see that the same 3 or 4 have been uploaded at least daily.
Now view available and they are still there.
If this is the case then hide them (I think it's right click and select as an option).0 -

I'm now getting messages saying Run Windows Repair Tool, which I did but then wants to charge me to repair the errors. Think I'll just dump laptop in River Thames.
That Windows Repair Tool appears illegitimate. Perhaps time to run a check for Malware or to run a back up and a clean install.
Either way, start a new thread detailing your problem, alongside the details of your machine, including the brand name and full model number of the laptop.0
