  • We have had ours years so i do not think they will still be making our model, but the model number is WHD-101B.Just do a search on them and look for a good deal, try Quidco for cash back or tesco for the points and don't forget to haggle, if you don't ask you don't get
  • Hi, i bought one a few years ago from B&Q its practically the same as Roger Blacks one and was £85 at the time. I use mine in my bedroom as i get a small amount of mould form on my north facing wall by the skirting board. Can anyone advise, i was told to shut the windows whilst using one of these as the dehumidifier can draw out the dampness in the air outside. Is this true? Is it also true that they are not efficient to run in bathrooms?

Yes close the windows when it is operating.

They work perfectly well in bathrooms, but obviously like any electrical appliance should not be used when bathing or showering.

Have to agree with boysim34 the dehumidifier was the best thing we bought last year, we now have two and it changes the whole atmosphere of the house. We have no central heating and use a gas fire and oil filled heaters and find we are using them less. Its the humidity in the cold air that made the house feel colder, you wont regret buying one it will transform your home.

Having just moved and finding damp problems I brought a dehumidifier and it is staggering how much water it takes out.
I was told one of the problems is the insulation we put in. Double glazing may stop drafts but the lack of movement of air keeps the moisture in, 10 inches of roof insulation causes more problems.

I am trying to work out how to plumb the machine in so I don’t have to empty it everyday.

Apparently to avoid wall mould “Shock Airing” should be employed.
This consists of opening all windows and doors 2 - 3 times a day for about 2- 4 minutes, during the heating season..
It has been determined that a short blast of “shock” ventilation completely refreshes the internal air and reduces the humidity. The short time is designed to retain the room fabric temperature whilst exchanging the air, removing the high humidity.
A full explanation is here under correct airing

  • One way to get rid of Mould for good is to use IPA (isopropyl alcohol), the medical / commercial grade stuff as opposed to that from the Chemist, it kills Mould for good, I treated a wall with the stuff two years ago and its never come back, unlike the commercial mould remover which lasts, at best, 3 - 6 months per treatment.

A word of warning, wear masks when using the stuff, and ventilate the house, especially the room you are using it in. Arrange for your Son to sleep in a different room or at a relatives for at least two nights after using it. But the results are worth the hassle.

  • Hi everyone, its been a little while but I thought I would update in case anyone else stumbles across this post in the future. We purchased the dehumidifier as advised and wow what a difference! We have it turned on most days (but not night), we keep it upstairs on the landing and monitor the humidity level with the digital reader we purchased from ebay, it usually says around 52-54% which seems to be an acceptable level to allow us to be MOULD FREE! We have gone from cleaning my sons ceiling/wall weekly to never having to clean it all all! We have had to clean mould from our room twice since our purchase but thats only been a tiny spot in the corner and we do dry all our washing in their so we did expect it.
Cannot rate the dehumidfiers enough, they have changed the way we live, its so nice to know my son is in bed breathing mould spore free air!

A big thanks to all who had input and helped us deal with this issue!

You can get cheaper quieter de-humidifiers eg peltier types rather than compressor types.

They take water out at a slower rate than the compressor types, but claim to still be suitable for small rooms.

Cost around £50. Power consumption around 70 watts.

I've ordered one for my utility room, but still awaiting arrival, so can't comment on how effective this type is.

This is the one I am getting

However, I don't know if is powerful enough for your needs
