Painting ceilings

Not a how question. Just why!
All the ceilings in my house are painted a different Colour to the walls. If the wall is buttermilk the celiling is brilliant white but if thr wall is white the celiling is light grey.

Is this normal (I've never noticed it anywhere else) or is it just the old owners being lazy? Maybe it's a style/trend thing?

What are the pros and cons of painting like this? apart from needing lots of different types of paint!
Thanks!

is it actually light grey or is it white and the light reflects differently on it from the walls

My ceilings are all white, it reflects the light and accents your colour scheme, in my lounge which is mushroom and duck egg blue the ceiling looks like it has a hint of blue, however it is white. In my bedroom where my scheme is raspberry and warm beige my ceiling looks tinted with pale pink, but yes it is white.

Ceilings usually are painted a different colour to the walls.

However,I've never seen coloured ceilings in real life.I have seen Farrow & Ball recommend different colour ceilings though with each colour chosen based on what would work with the wall colour.

    Personally,I think it's a bit potty!

Thanks everyone - seems that white is the ceiling colour of choice! Although my paint so so slightly off white that I suspect the difference will be barely noticeable.
I can really see the logic behind it, thanks all for the explanations!

On the grey ceiling/white walls, now that I'm in the room its the other way round, :o and you can tell because the grey extends about an inch into the ceiling (easy mistake, lol)
The Farrow and ball option does sound odd, put like that!
